DIY Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day (For Moms and Dads to Read)

Encourage your kids to make a homemade gift for Mother’s Day. What could possibly be more special than a gift that a child has spent their time and energy on making?

Some buy nothing ideas:

  1. Card – give your kids paper, pens, crayons, glue and any other stationery supplies you have laying around the house (maybe you have some leftover glitter, interestingly shaped dried pasta, streamers and the like) and let them create a special Mother’s Day card. The card will be something to be treasured and to show to them when they are grown up and have kids of their own.
  1. Baked treat – there are so many recipes available on the web or even use this time to teach them how to make a family favourite. The sky is the limit with this one and it will be an amazing learning experience. The bonus – the end product can also be enjoyed together.
  1. Plant something – so much of our kitchen scraps can be salvaged such as the ends of carrots, onions, spring onions and celery and grown into new plants. Pique their interest in growing their own vegetables and herbs. Since avocado season is upon us why not get them to take the pit of the avocado and grow an avocado plant in some water. It is a trial and error exercise but when there is success and something starts growing, it is extremely rewarding.
  1. A gift does not need to be a physical gift – ask your kids what makes them happy for instance do they enjoy spending time with their grandparents, playing sport, being with their friends and playing with their pets. Find a related area where they can then give something to someone else perhaps visit an old age home or old neighbour, spend time at the local animal shelter or just a simple handwritten note to a special friend to say thank you for the friendship.

And finally, Happy Mother’s Day to everyone.
